Hi, my name is Mary Wellems and I teach Middle School Social Studies and Literature, as well as acting as the 7th Grade Homeroom Advisor. I received my Master of Science in Community Health Education and a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education. I have been teaching for the past 15 years in the Archdiocese of Colorado and I love to watch the students “light up” when they understand new ideas and concepts. I enjoy watching them grow into educated, compassionate, and faith-filled individuals.
I love teaching in a Catholic School because the children will be the future of the Catholic faith. I believe the goal of teaching is to foster learning; everyone is capable of learning. Learning develops in different circumstances. Students have many different learning styles and a teacher needs to try to accommodate these different learning styles. The classroom setting should encourage learning. A teacher needs to show interest in the subject and have a passion for learning and teaching. As a teacher, my job is to create an atmosphere that encourages learning and is safe for all learners. I am a teacher because I have a passion for guiding students through the learning process, in addition to a passion for the material I teach.
One of the most important things I hope to pass on to my students is that learning is a process that never ends. I am always trying new and different teaching methods for presenting information to my students in order to improve the learning atmosphere I create in my classroom.
In my spare time, I love to travel, trying new things and meeting new people. I enjoy reading, gardening, needle work, and cooking. I describe myself as a “Closet Domesticated Goddess.” I also enjoy cruising around town on my bike and hiking in the mountains. I play volleyball on an “old lady” recreational team and I practice Kung Fu and Tia Chi, of which by the way I am not that graceful!
